After School Program Begins Monday at the Civic Center
By Heather White
Beginning next week, the Montpelier Civic Center will be offering an After School Program (ASP) for students ages K-6. Students will be able to attend the program after school until 5:30 p.m. Each evening. Elizabeth King of Montpelier will be the ASP Director. She currently works as a teacher's assistant for the Blackford County Head Start and has worked in a classroom setting for the past three years, previously as a substitute for grades K-8. She has fostered 22 children over the years. She is certified in First Aid, CPR and AED. The program will run on both Blackford and Southern Wells school schedules, meaning program days will be open if one school is in session. Students in the program will have the opportunity to utilize some of the Montpelier Public Library's after school programs, set to begin in October. The programs currently being discusses are the History Club ran by Ryan Ingram each Wednesday from 4-5:30 p.m. and Game Days each Thursday from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. The remainder of the time will be spent in the civic center gym or conference room. King will offer daily activities for the children. Activities will include physical fitness games, craft times, and board games. She will also hold movie days. Children will also have time to read or work on their homework. King says she will be asking children what activities they like to do most in order to tailor the program to the students' interests. Snacks and drinks will be provided, as well. For the first week, staff will be on hand at Montpelier School and at the Southern Wells bus stop to walk children to the civic center. Parents are asked to be at the civic center no later than 5:30 p.m. to pick up their children. Children will only be released to those authorized on the registration form. The cost is $5 per day or $25 per week for civic center members and $6 per day or $30 per week for nonmembers. Family rates are available. Call for more information. Weekly payments are due each Thursday and can be paid to the civic center manager. The manager is in the office each Thursday until 7 p.m. Those that attend sporadically should send payment with their child that day. Registration forms are available at Montpelier School, Southern Wells School, the civic center, and online at
